Over the last 20 years, Kate Browning has worked as a class teacher, SENCo, Local Authority School Improvement Officer for SEN, and Education Development Officer for NASEN. She is also Chair of Governors and SEN Governor at her local school.
Kate now works as an independent consultant specialising in school improvement for SEND across the country. She teaches the National Award for SEN Coordination and facilitates SENCo Network meetings across Leicestershire and Warwickshire.
She writes guidance for SENCOs in leading and managing SEN provision and practice and delivers training for schools, Local Authorities, Teaching School Alliances and Academy Trusts. She has supported NASEN in delivering national training on the SEND Code of Practice
This course will firstly outline the duties of the Governing Board in relation to the education of children and Young People with SEND with reference to the SEND Code of Practice and the Equality Act 2010.
It will also explore the key findings from Ofsted as to the features of schools that are effective in enabling children and young people with SEND to make good progress.
It will then model a structured approach to how the SENCO and SEN Governor can work together to ensure the school is using its ‘best endeavours’ to make sure children and young people with SEN in the school get the support they need. This will include deepening the SEN Governor’s understanding of the unique challenges of the SENCo role and show how the Governing Board can contribute to the whole school self-evaluation of SEND and ultimately provide effective support and challenge to help drive improvements in the outcomes.
Participants will:
Know the key duties of the Governing Board in relation to SEND as referenced in the SEND Code of Practice and The Equality Act 2010
Know what Ofsted have found to be the features of the features of schools that are effective in enabling children and young people with SEND to make good progress.
Know how to decide what the SENCO and SEN Governor can meaningfully focus on when they meet - what questions to ask and how to present the answers!
Enable the SEN Governor to better understand the role of the SENCO in their own school
Time to explore the success and challenges the school faces in educating children with SEND in their school.
